It’s not every day that someone puts blood, sweat, tears and emotional hours into helping animals…unless you are “Lighting the Dark.”

Lighting the Dark is a proud parent who puts her free time into spreading the word on anti-animal abuse, animal rights, anti-animal testing and fights against the wholesale slaughter of animals. iSolarPlanet first encountered Lighting the Dark on MySpace when we were looking for cool new friends that might be interested in alternative energy or green living.

The information that Lighting the Dark provides on her MySpace page includes ways to get informed about abused animals and animals in captivity. She had a link to a covert video made by animal extremists who were rescuing bunnies from a scientific research facility. (Oftentimes these rabbits are either killed during research or else after research is completed.) The video was inspiring yet slightly disturbing…I saw people in ski masks that looked like people out of Mission Impossible.

The whole experience of being friends with Lighting the Dark is something that goes beyond simple Environmental Awareness. It’s like being part of an activist community that is undaunted by the average social superfluity that permeates MySpace. While most people are either trying to promote their band or meet new people, Lighting the Dark uses both video clips and thought provoking pictures in order to inform and convince.

Add Lighting the Dark as a friend on MySpace now and get to know someone who cares tremendously about the Environment and Animals. Even though I often get suprised and sometimes stunned by the activities of activist groups and their supporters. The opportunities for learning and making a difference never stop when you open your mind and stop for a second to make a new friend.

Edward Norton may be the new star for the action smash sequel to the new “Hulk” movie, but he has surely been green since 2007! Edward’s part in the new Hulk film is exciting because he is such a distinguished actor. And his commitment to the environment is paramount. In 2007 Edward Norton participated in the BP Celebrity Neighbors program, which allowed Edward Norton to purchase Solar Panels for his home. But that’s just talking about flowers. Think about all the useless packaging and materials that are discarded for Valentine’s Day. First there are the semi-popular aluminum love balloons. Think these balloons are biodegradable? Think again. Aluminum Foil Balloons stick around for centuries. Or what about all the uneaten Valentines Day Candy? Think about how Halloween candy piles up on the shelves the day after the festivities are over. There are literally tons of candy waste every year from expired candy. And since Valentine’s Day is famous for chocolate, the shelf life is much lower than holidays like Easter which is attributed with jelly beans. Unlike chocolate, jelly beans can survive in their hard shells for years without going bad (much)…and if the jelly beans are in their original packaging, a consumer could enjoy them centuries later.

Some alternatives to all this overconsumption of physical material on holidays like Valentine’s Day include singing a song, or
giving a hug or simply cooking a sexy home-cooked dinner for your loved ones. Trust me, these things work and your soul-mate or valentine sweetheart will love it!

PETA: Wrong Meeting - A clip about dog breeders and how they use terminology similar to the KKK.
The PETA clip brings up how dog breeders are trying to create a “master race” for dogs. At first the notion of dog breeders being similar in genetic philosophy to KKK. But the PETA announcement brings up some interesting points.

First the KKK believed that there is a “Master Race” and this Master Race was superior to all other races. Similarly dog show breeders do use terminology like inferior mixed breeds.

PETA has always been known to have aggressive clips and advertisements. PETA’s public service announcements have ranged in content from violent images about dead chickens and pigs being abused to staged scenes of muggers smacking women in fur coats. The mugger in the video rips the fur off the body of the dead woman and then escapes hastily with his furry prize.

What is the point of these videos? To cause an emotional response in the viewer to change your perspective.

Theo Hirsch has been written up in the OC Weekly as a shocking artist. The man speaks his mind and isn’t afraid of doing so. Usually Theo’s lyrics are centered on entertaining people into enlightenment. He uses his charisma and writing expertise to, “wake up,” the audience. So why is Theo Hirsch so concerned with the environment and solar energy? Theo has long been a proponent of alternative energy, and any method of thwarting the establishment’s stranglehold on energy. Gas prices are up, heating bills are expensive by the minute…an alternative isn’t a nice to, it’s a necessity.
